Harbor side Shipyard Park
John Hunter established one of the first shipyards in the
City at the foot of Wilken Street as early as 1783. The
first “Potomac River Longboat” was built here at
Hunters Shipyard in 1815. Shipbuilding and repair
continued on this site for well over 100 years.
This park was constructed through a cooperative effort
of the City of Alexandria, the National Park Service,
Dominion Lands, Inc. and Abrams on Properties.
Dedicated to the citizens of Alexandria by Mayor
Patricia Tiggr on September 29, 1994.
Greeting Clanfolk!
Good things have been
happening to our Clan despite the
stresses of the economy. To bring you
up to date, our Clan Chief, Pauline is
now recognized in Burke’s Peerage,
after 200 years of the Scottish Clan
chiefs being ignored by the English! Our
small Clan is getting greater and greater
visibility due to the efforts of your
board, with more and more benefits
accruing to our insistence that we are
there and quite famous. For most of you,
this will mean that more vendors are
stocking clan goods with the Hunter
tartan or crest. Our historian, Ken
Hunter has gained us respect in Britain
by pointing out what a Medical Clan we
have and that the two famous Hunter
brothers, John and William Hunter,
founders of modern scientific medicine,
surgery, and obstetrics were members of
our Clan. A recent article by Ken on the
subject has just appeared in the Scottish
Banner.
Our games are going well.
New tents have been started in several
areas. We welcome Jim and Terree
Lyman who have established a Clan
Hunter tent at the Seattle Scottish
Games. We are very grateful for all that
they have done for us. It takes a good
bit of effort and particularly courage, to
start a tent. You members in the
Northwest pay attention; you now have a
game in your area with a Hunter tent.
Keep an eye out for the date in 2004 so
you can come and support Jim and
Terree! We also owe great thanks to
Raymond Morehead who provided great
